la Repubblica (Italian for "The Republic") is, as of 2011, the largest circulation Italian daily general-interest newspaper.
It was founded in 1976 in Rome by Gruppo Editoriale L'Espresso led by Eugenio Scalfari and Carlo Caracciolo and Arnoldo Mondadori Editore. Born as a radical/socialist newspaper, it has since moderated to a centre-left political stance.
